Winter Thrifting: Items That Sell Best During Cold Months
Seasonal selling is one of the smartest things you can do as a reseller. When the temperature drops, certain items suddenly become hot sellers. If you know what to look for, winter can actually be one of your most profitable seasons.
Here is your complete guide to the items that sell best during cold months and how to price them for maximum profit.
Wool Coats
A quality wool coat is one of the best winter thrift finds you can make. People are willing to pay good money for a warm, stylish coat.

Here is what to look for:
- 100% wool or wool blends — Check the tag. Pure wool and high wool-content blends sell for the most.
- Classic styles — Peacoats, long dress coats, and wrap coats are always popular.
- Trusted brands — J.Crew, Pendleton, London Fog, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren all do well.
- Vintage wool coats — Older coats with interesting details or unique colors can sell for even more than modern ones.
You can usually find wool coats at thrift stores for $8 to $20 and sell them for $40 to $150 depending on the brand and condition.

Patagonia and North Face Jackets
These two brands are absolute goldmines in winter. People search for them by name, so they sell fast.
- Patagonia fleeces — The Retro-X, Better Sweater, and Synchilla styles are especially popular. Vintage Patagonia pieces can sell for $80 to $200 or more.
- North Face puffer jackets — The Nuptse is the most sought-after style. Even well-worn ones sell quickly.
- North Face Denali fleeces — A classic that never goes out of style. These sell steadily all winter long.
- Patagonia Nano Puff — Lightweight but warm. Buyers love these for layering.
When you spot Patagonia or North Face at the thrift store, grab it. Seriously. Do not think twice. These brands have incredible resale value year-round, but winter is when they really fly off the shelves.

Boots
Winter boots are a huge category. The right pair can bring in a really nice profit.
UGG Boots
- Classic tall and short styles sell the best
- Look for clean suede and intact sheepskin lining
- Even pre-owned UGGs in good shape sell for $40 to $80
- New or like-new pairs can go for $80 to $130
Sorel Boots
- Joan of Arctic and Caribou styles are the most popular
- Waterproof snow boots are in high demand once the first snowfall hits
- These sell well on eBay and Poshmark for $50 to $100
Other boot brands to watch for:
- L.L. Bean duck boots (the Bean Boot is iconic)
- Hunter rain boots (great for fall and early winter)
- Timberland boots
- Dr. Martens (sell well all year, but especially in fall and winter)
Cashmere Sweaters
Cashmere is one of my favorite things to look for. It is lightweight, super soft, and buyers will pay a premium for it.
- How to spot it: Always check the fabric tag. If it says 100% cashmere, grab it. Even blends with high cashmere content are worth picking up.
- Best brands: Charter Club, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Eileen Fisher, and J.Crew cashmere all do well.
- Pricing: You can often find cashmere sweaters for $4 to $10 at thrift stores and sell them for $25 to $60 depending on the brand and color.
- Condition matters: Check for pilling, holes, and stains. Light pilling is okay since you can use a fabric shaver, but holes are usually a deal breaker.
Neutral colors like black, grey, camel, and cream tend to sell fastest. But a bright or unique color can stand out in search results and attract buyers too.

Scarves and Winter Accessories
Do not overlook the accessories section. Scarves, gloves, and hats can be quick and easy flips.
- Cashmere and wool scarves — These sell well, especially from brands like Burberry, Coach, and Eileen Fisher.
- Blanket scarves — Oversized plaid scarves are popular every single winter.
- Leather gloves — Lined leather gloves from brands like Fownes or Coach sell for $20 to $40.
- Knit hats and beanies — Branded beanies from Carhartt, The North Face, or Patagonia sell quickly.
Accessories are great because they are small, easy to ship, and you can fit a lot of them in one sourcing trip.
Holiday Decor and Vintage Ornaments
This one might surprise you, but holiday decor sells incredibly well during the cold months. Start listing in October and keep going through December.
- Vintage Christmas ornaments — Shiny Brite, Hallmark, and handblown glass ornaments have collectors who will pay good money.
- Vintage ceramic Christmas trees — These are hugely popular. A good one can sell for $50 to $200.
- Department 56 village pieces — The Snow Village and Dickens collections are very collectible.
- Nutcrackers and vintage Santas — Larger, well-made pieces do best.
Thrift stores get flooded with holiday donations in the fall. That is the perfect time to stock up.

Ski Gear
If you live near a ski area or even if you do not, ski gear has a strong resale market.
- Ski jackets — Brands like Spyder, Obermeyer, Columbia, and Arc'teryx are popular.
- Snow pants — Harder to find at thrift stores, which makes them sell faster when you do find them.
- Base layers — Merino wool and synthetic base layers from Smartwool or Patagonia sell well.
- Goggles and helmets — Name-brand goggles like Smith and Oakley are worth picking up if they are in good shape.
Seasonal Pricing Tips
Timing is everything with seasonal items. Here are a few tips to help you make the most money:
- List early. Start listing winter items in September and October. Buyers start shopping for cold weather gear before it actually gets cold.
- Price higher at the start of the season. You can ask top dollar in October and November when demand is highest.
- Drop prices in January and February. After the holidays, demand slows down. Mark things down to keep inventory moving.
- Save unsold items for next year. If something does not sell, store it and relist it next fall. Do not give it away for nothing.
- Source winter items in spring and summer. When nobody else wants heavy coats and boots, that is when you can get them for the lowest prices at thrift stores.

List It Once, Sell It Everywhere
When you have a bunch of seasonal inventory to get listed, speed matters. You want your items live on as many platforms as possible before the season ends.
That is where List Perfectly comes in. It lets you create one listing and push it out to eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Depop, and more. No copying and pasting. No retyping descriptions. Just list it once and you are done.
Use code THRIFT30 to save on your subscription. It is the easiest way to get more eyes on your winter inventory before the season is over.
